Moka Bar, Soho, 1953
London’s first espresso bar
Opened in 1953 on Frith Street in Soho, the Moka Bar brought Italian coffee culture to London for the first time. Designed by architect Gina Lollobrigida’s husband, Milko Skofic, its striking interior featured an espresso machine, exotic décor and even live peacocks in cages. It quickly became a fashionable meeting place for London’s emerging café society.
Why it’s a London First: The Moka Bar is widely
recognised as London’s first Italian-style espresso bar, introducing Londoners to a new way of drinking coffee and socialising. It helped spark the coffee bar revolution of the 1950s, transforming Soho into a centre of youth culture, music
and modern life.
