Lollard Street Adventure Playground, 1955
One of London’s first adventure playgrounds
Built on the ruins of a Second World War bombsite
in Lambeth, Lollard Street became one of London’s
pioneering adventure playgrounds. Championed by
landscape architect Marjory Allen, it transformed
derelict land into a place where children could build dens, climb, invent and explore using
discarded timber, bricks, tyres and tools.
Why it’s a London First: Opened in the mid-1950s,
Lollard Street wasone of Britain’s earliest purpose-designed adventure playgrounds and became an
influential model for child-led, creative play.
It challenged the traditional playground by giving
children the freedom to shape their own environment.
